Principle

Design strategy that imitates properties of familiar things. • Three types: surface (appearance), behavioral (actions), and functional (use). • Surface mimicry suggests function via visual similarity (e.g., folder icons). • Behavioral mimicry elicits emotional responses (e.g., robotic pets). • Functional mimicry borrows mechanisms from other systems (e.g., adding machine keypad).
